NOTE: The TSB states, "Some 1980 and 1981 were equipped with ball bearing type hubs which are not serviceable and must be replaced as an assembly only. These non serviceable bearings can be readily identified, upon removal, by the absence of the axle to bearing spacer."

NEW FRONT WHEEL BEARING REPLACMENT PROCEDURES

In 1987 new service procedures were developed to replace the front wheel bearings on the 1982 - 1988 Eagles; 1986 - 88 Comanche; 1984 - 87 Cherokee and Wrangler and the 1987 Wrangler. This procedure may also apply to vehicles built after these dates.

This service procedure involves the use of a special tool set PN 8980 002 647 to remove the bearing assemblies from the drive hub. Editors Note: This tool set may now be availabe thru traditional parts or tool stores.

The new tools were designed for use with an arbor or hydaulic press and the Kent-Moore bearing remover tool J-22912-01. They must not be used with any impact tools, such as a slide hammer or machinist hammer to remove or install the bearings. See figure 1.

HUB AND BEARING CARRIER REMOVAL - JEEP AND EAGLE. Refer to Figure 2 for Part Identification.


NOTE: Steps 6 & 7 apply only to the Eagle


1. Raise the Vehicle. NOTE: It may be advisable to loosen the axle nut first, then raise the vehicle. Refer to the first part of Step 5 to do this. Do not completely remove nut at this time.


2. Remove the wheel-tire assembly.


3. Remove the disc brake caliper but do not disconnect the brake hose. Secure the caliper to the chassis with wire. CAUTION: Do not allow the brake hose to support the caliper weight. Make sure to secure the caliper to the chassis.


4. Remove the brake rotor (5) (Fig. 2).


5. Remove the cotter pin (1), nut retainer (2), axle nut (3), and washer (4) (Fig. 2).


6. Eagle Only Disconnect steering arm from the steering knuckle.


7. Eagle Only Remove caliper anchor plate from the steering knuckle.


8. Remove the three carrier bolts (17) (Fig. 2).


9. Remove the hub (6), bearing carrier (10) and rotor shield (16) (Fig. 2).

BEARING REMOVAL


CAUTION: The bearing removal tools are designed for use with an arbor or hydraulic press and Kent-Moore Bearing remover J-22912-01. They must not be used with any type of impact tool such as a machinist hammer or slide hammer.


1. Attatch Press Plate 5073 (Fig. 1) to the rear of the hub and carrier assembly as shown in Figure 3. Secure the plate with M12 X 1.75 X 40 mm bolts. (A) (Fig. 3)

2. Position the assembled hub, carrier, and press plate in an arbor or hydraulic press.


3. Press the hub out of the carrier (B) with press pin 5074 (Fig. 4)

4. Cut and remove the plastic bearing cage (C) (Fig. 5) from the hub inner bearing. Use diagnol pliers or tin snips to cut the bearing cage. Discard the roller bearings after removing the cage.

5. Remove the remaining part of the inner bearing from the hub as follows:

Install remover tool J-22912-01 on the inner bearing (D) (Fig. 6). Then position the remover tool and hub in an arbor press or hydraulic press.

6. Press the hub (E) out of the inner bearing (F) with press pin 5074 (Fig. 7)

7. On Eagle Models, remove the O-ring seal (11) (Fig. 2) from the hub. Discard the seal, it is not reusable.


8. On Jeep models, remove the carrier seal (15) (Fig. 2). Discard the seal, it is not reusable.


9. On Eagle Models, remove the inner bearing (12) (Fig. 2)


10. On Jeep models, prss the inner bearing seal (G) (Fig. 8) from the hub using the inner race and bearing installer (5078) (Fig. 8). NOTE: Be sure the word "Jeep" on tool 5078 is facing downward toward the hub.

11. On Eagle Models, position the bearing race remover tool 5075 between the inner and outer bearing races (H) (Fig. 9)


12. On Jeep models, position the bearing race remover tool 5076 between the inner and outer bearing races (H) (Fig. 9)


13. Position press pin 5074 (Fig. 9) on bearing race remover tool.

14. Place on press and press out inner bearing race, rotate and press out outer bearing race. (Fig. 10). CAUTION: Never use anything other than prescribed tools to remover bearing races as damage to the internal machined shoulder of the barrier carrier could result.

FRONT WHEEL BEARING REASSEMBLY


1. Thoroughly clean hub (6) (Fig. 2) and bearing carrier (10) (Fig. 2) with mineral spirits. Dry using compressed air.


2. Assemble press plate 5073 to bearing carrier (1) (Fig. 11).


3. Position bearing race (J) (Fig. 11) into bearing carrier.


4. Position bearing installer tool 5077 on outer bearing race. NOTE: Be sure appropriate end of bearing race installer tool 5077 is facing downward, toward bearing carrier. One end of the bearing installer is marked "Eagle" the outher end is marked "Jeep".


5. Rotate assembled press plate with bearing carrier and repeat steps 3 and 4 for inner race.


CAUTION: Do not overload press when installing bearing races. Bearing races should be flush with machined shoulder of bearing carrier.

6. Pack outer bearing (K) (Fig. 12) and coat race with AMC/Jeep All Purpose Lubricant P/N 8993630 or equivalent.


7. Place bearing (K) (Fig. 12) into bearing carrier (L) (Fig. 12)

8. Press outer bearing seal (M) into bearing carrier (N) using seal installer 5079 (Fig. 13)


9. Coat lip of bearing with grease

10. Press bearing carrier (O) (Fig. 14) onto hub (P) (Fig. 13) using bearing installer 5078 and bearing race installer 5077 (Fig. 14). NOTE: Be sure appropriate end of bearing race installer tool 5077 is facing downward toward the hub. One end of the bearing race installer is marked "Eagle", and the other end is marked "Jeep".

11. Pack inner bearing (Q) (Fig. 15) and coat race with All Purpose Lubricant.

15. On Jeep models, place inner bearing and seal (V) (Fig. 16) on bearing carrier (U) (Fig. 16).


16. Install seal installer tool 5080 (Fig. 16) and press inner bearing (U) (Fig. 16) and seal (V) (Fig. 16) onto hub.
