to measure ring gear backlash. The indicator plunger should touch the drive side of a ring gear tooth at the right angles to the tooth. Hold the pinion from turning with one hand and rotate the ring gear against the dial indicator with the other. Backlash should be 0.005 - 0.010 in. (0.12 - 0.25 mm). If not, have the differential disassembled and adjusted.

2.- Measure ring gear runout. It should not exceed o.006 in. (0.15 mm). If it dose, have the differential repaired.

Rear Differential

1.- Mount a dial indicator on the housing as shown in Figure 25

to measure ring gear backlash. the indicator plunger should touch the drive side of a ring gear tooth at right angles to the the tooth. Hold the pinion from turning with one hand and rotate the ring gear against the dial indicator with the other. Backlash should be 0.005 - 0.009 in. (0.12 - 0.22 mm), with 0.008 in. (0.20 mm) desired. If not have the differential disassembled and adjusted.

2.- Remount the dial indicator as shown in Figure 26

to measure ring gear runout. It should not exceed 0.002 in. (0.05 mm). If it does, have the differential repaired.
