A "wiki" is a user-editable website. This means that you, the reader, have the ability to edit the page that you're reading. Just click on the "edit" button at the top of the page and go to it!

Wikis allow communities of people to collaborate on projects and information. We'll be able to provide detailed how-tos and technical information for the AMC Eagle. For example, one person might write a simple how-to for changing the valve cover gasket; another person might update the page with a specific Fel-Pro part number for the gasket; another person might take pictures of the process; and somebody else can proofread the page and make minor corrections here and there. The reader will get the benefit of a step-by-step tutorial complete with pictures, without any one person needing to spend a lot of time writing it up.

The easiest way I have found to start a new article is to first create a link to it on the Main Page -- the page you first come to after logging in.

Look on the main page as to where your article fits and then use the edit tab to create your article link. You do this by using 2 opening "square" brackets (<nowiki>"[["</nowiki>) in front of your article name and then two closing brackets (<nowiki>"]]"</nowiki>) at the end of your article name. Of course you need to put your article name in place of the example I used. Once you have done that save the page with the save tab on the bottom.

Now that you are back at the main page in the non edit mode find your new link (it should be in red, meaning its empty) and click on it. It will take you to a blank page that says "Editing ..." You can now begin writing your article.

If you want to bold something highlight the text you want to make bold and click the '''"B"''' tab at the top of the page, likewise for italics.

Images are pretty easy to upload. The max image width you should use is 800 pixels and just keep your file size modest -- if it is too large it will tell you. The easiest way I have found to create an image is first to insert, using the picture tab at top, where you want the picture to go. Then replace the word "example" within the tag with the name you want to assign the picture. It does not have to be the same as the picture's file name on your computer. Once you have done that then save your article. Now, click on your new picture link and it will take you to the upload section. You will see the name you gave your picture for the wike and above that box is the browse button to access the picture you want to upload. Use it and insert the file name of the picture you desire. Then you are ready to upload using that button. Once it is done you will see a preview. Now all you have to do is go to the main page, then to your article link, click on it and your picture should be there.

1981 probably had the most significant changes during the entire model run. The most obvious was the addition of two new models: The sporty SX/4 based on the Spirit and the low priced Kammback based on the old Spirit/Gremlin. All Eagles this year received new bumper end caps and an integrated bumper look that improved the overall looks of the car. Other new features were a restyled grill and the optional alloy wheels. Under the hood a four cylinder engine ( A Pontiac 2.5 L) was now standard making the 258 engine an option and a manual transmission became standard equipment as well. Three trim levels were offered in 1981; Base, DL/Sport and Limited. During the model year [[Select Drive]] was offered as an option on some models. This meant the driver could now choose between 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive at the flick of a switch from inside the car. Other new features this year were: Six cylinder head and engine block redesigned for weight reduction. aluminum intake manifold, plastic valve cover and better casting techniques; idle speed control on six cylinder engine; 4 Wheel Drive" cast metal emblem on rear quarters; and all 50 series Eagles (SX/4's & Kammbacks) came with a "power bulge" hood and no hood ornament. Despite the addition of two models and the styling changes 1981 sales were about 9,000 fewer from the year before. The 3 orginal models took the biggest sales dives, especially the 2 and 4 door sedans; while the SX/4 sold very well as it attracted younger first time 4WD buyers and more than likely first time AMC buyers.

A rare variant of the 1981 AMC Eagle was a Convertible model. Based on the 2 Door Sedan it was fitted out with the new top by the Griffith Company. It has not been established how many were ever built, estimates range from 250 to 500 units; and if they were only built in 1981 -- they were available in 1982 but may have been 1981 production models. Buyers would order the two door sedan of their choice thru their AMC dealer and then the car would be built and transported for conversion which added around $3,000 to the selling price.

If you have a '81 thru '86 258 with a plastic valve cover it leaks. AMC could not fix it and the only way you can is to replace with an aftermarket extruded aluminum one. Although a labor intensive upgrage it is fairly easy and should be the first thing you do for your AMC Eagle. You should plan to do this over a two or three day period, you will see why later.

An up front warning -- there was no rhyme or reason as to what holes AMC tapped for attaching replacement valve covers. Some have them all tapped while others varied. I did come upon a solution if you do not want to tap holes.

The task at hand, getting rid of this:

[[Image:Valvecover1.jpg]]

There is a lot of stuff in the way of your valve cover and this is what makes it so labor intensive.

First disconnect your battery.

You will want to first mark both ends of every vacuum line you want to move out of the way. I used masking tape and numbered the ends.

You may have to disconnect an AC hose on later models as they were shorter than those found on earlier models.

Also you need to disconnect the fuel line and remove any other item which will impede the removal and installation. You will thank your self for this as the job progresses.

Make sure everything attached to the old cover is also removed.

Also, remove the wiper motor completely -- this is easy, four bolts and a clip that secures the motor shaft to the wiper transmission.

Lastly, tie a rope around the wire loom (you may want to remove one or two of the loom retainers on the fire wall) and carefully pull it up and out of the way as far as you can. Secure the rope, I used the back bumper.

Now you should be able to actually remove the the valve cover. It is probably attached with a bolt in the back, one in the front and 3 on the passenger side. On the driver's side you will need to remove the larger nuts and retaining washers.

Even with all that you have done to provide working room getting the old one off will take some maneuvering -- tipping it towards the passenger side to clear the rocker bridges will probably work best.

Finally it is off -- reward yourself.

Thoroughly clean the mating surface on your head to prep it for the new cover.

The instructions that came with your new cover will probably say to attach the gasket to the cover first. DON'T DO THIS!

First determine which holes are not tapped. Probably the ones on the driver's side.

What I did was to purchase 4 short 1/4" diameter double ended studs as you will want to do this on the back one too and 4 of those round nuts (hex nuts will not clear) with the flat sides for a wrench to fit - better yet get the ones with the hex hole on top (really handy for the back one). Thoroughly degrease the holes, grind one end of the studs for the driver's side hole so they will fit snugly (you can screw the back one in) and then JB weld them in -- let these set up for a while until they don't wiggle.

Then put red gasket goop on the head and put the new gasket in. Finger tighten the bolts to hold it in place and leave it alone for 24 hours.

Next day. Check your work - make sure the JB weld is fully cured. Remove the bolts that held the gasket in place. Place a bead of your gasket goop on the top of the gasket.

Carefully, and this will again take some finesse place the new valve cover in place. Snug down the nuts and bolts but do not over tighten. Just tighten to the point where it is good and snug.

Walk away for 24 hours for the goop to fully cure.

Next day. Resnug your fasteners. They will probably only need a little bit of retorquing.

Replace everything else make sure it all goes back as it was before -- hence all the prep work at first.

When you are sure you have it all done, reconnect your battery and fire her up. Check for leaks.

If you took your time you will probably have none.
Robhttp://amceaglesden.com/guide/index.php?title=File:Valvecover1.jpg&diff=1314File:Valvecover1.jpg2005-11-21T08:11:46Z
Rob: Engine bay showing a stock valve cover.

== A Wiki? What's a "Wiki"? ==

== Getting Started ==

If you're interested in contributing, the first thing you need to do is read an [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Editing introduction to editing wikis]. Next, [http://www.amceaglenest.com/guide/index.php?title=Special:Userlogin&returnto=Main_Page create an account] and log in.

== Uploading Pictures ==

File uploading has been enabled. If you want to add a picture to a page, you need to upload the image file using the "Upload file" link in the toolbox on the left. Please, do not upload copyrighted images.

== Discussing a Page ==

You can click the "discussion" link above any page to see or add to discussion about that page's contents.

== Creating a New Page ==

You can create new pages on the wiki. There are several ways to do this; one way is to enter the title of the new page into the search box at the left, click "Go" (not "Search"), and if it says the page wasn't found then it will give you a link in red that says "this exact title". Clicking that link should take you to a blank new page. Just type in your text and save it!

Please note that in a wiki, pages link to other pages by their title only. In other words, "Roy C. Lunn" is a good page title, but "Stuff About Roy C. Lunn" is a bad title, because any page that wants to link to "Stuff About Roy C. Lunn" will have to include the text "Stuff About Roy C. Lunn" in a sentence. I moved all the general wiki-related stuff to its own page now that we've actually got AMC-related content on the Main Page. This is a good example of the way wikis tend to evolve; somebody adds something to a page, so old information gets moved to a new page and linked from the existing one.
